San Cataldo


San Cataldo è da sempre considerata la spiaggia dei leccesi per la breve distanza che la divide dal capoluogo di provincia (8 Km). Testimonianze di come questo litorale fosse apprezzato già dall'antichità, provengono dalle fonte storiche che testimoniano come l'imperatore Adriano costruì nel secondo secolo il primo porto di cui sono visibili in buone condizioni alcuni resti. Zona di intensi traffici nel bacino del mediterraneo fu definitivamente distrutto ad opera di Turchi durante le loro incursioni e devastazioni nel territorio. Con la distruzione del porto, San Cataldo che aveva visto nei commerci propria linfa vitale, subì un inarrestabile declino, che riacquisto agli inizi del secolo come luogo balneare e di villeggiatura per le ricche e potenti casate leccesi. Oggi San Cataldo , che mai ha perso il fascino delle proprie spiagge e della rigogliosa macchia in cui è immersa è considerata perla turistica di eccellenza. A dimostrazione dell'incontaminata natura in cui è immersa a pochi passi si può giungere nella riserva naturale delle Cesine, unica nel suo genere con una inimmaginabile ricchezza faunistica e floristica.
